Cat5e in 2026: Past Its Prime for New Installations

Cat6a is the category for data centres, server rooms, high-density PoE and any installation where 10 Gbps must be guaranteed end to end. Its 500 MHz rating and heavier construction (usually 23 AWG with an overall foil or braid screen) keep alien crosstalk — interference between adjacent cables — low enough for 10 G at full distance. It is also the baseline for future 25 G/40 G short-reach links in many designs.
The trade-offs are real: Cat6a is thicker, less flexible, heavier and roughly 30–50% more expensive than Cat6 per metre. For long cable trays or under-desk runs it is harder to terminate. Buyers should not pay for Cat6a where runs are short — but they should absolutely pay for it where 100 m 10 G is a requirement.
Beyond the Category: What Actually Sits in the Box
- Shielding: U/UTP (unshielded), F/UTP (foil overall), S/FTP (braid + foil per pair). Shielding matters for alien crosstalk, PoE heat and noisy environments — but every shielded cable must be terminated with shielded connectors and properly grounded, or it performs worse than unshielded.
- Conductor gauge: 23 AWG or thicker for PoE and long runs; 24 AWG only for short, low-power use.
- Jacket rating: CMR (riser) or CMP (plenum) for building risers and air-handling spaces; PVC for general use. This is a code requirement in many countries, not an option.
